Public Safety a Priority

The Chairman’s “doomsday budget” for 2008 involved the cutting of some 200 jobs at the Sheriff’s Department. This included Deputies and jail guards. Our County Jail is already overcrowded, and the deputies we do have are spread thinly.

As your representative, I will aim for maintaining a level of protection and enforcement from our Sheriff’s Department that is concurrent with our needs. As our towns continue to expand, they continue to relieve the burden of patrol from the Sheriff’s Deputies. But we cannot rely on our towns to fill in where the County has to retreat. I will actively listen to your concerns about patrols in our unincorporated areas, and work with the Sheriff’s Department to provide funds for an effective police force.
