Preparing for the Future

In our County’s 2008 budget, Chairman Schillerstrom set aside $1 million in what he called a “rainy day fund.”
That fund grew to $4 million for 2009.

It’s a good idea, but it’s nowhere near enough.

All too often, governments are blindsided by crises or unforeseen expenses. This has to stop. It is the government’s responsibility to be prepared. As your representative, I will push for a greater level of savings in the County Treasury. With a budget nearing $500 million a year, the County should be able to set aside several million dollars per year in preparation for the future, and build on those savings in subsequent years. No government can foresee everything, and we should be ready to pay for the unexpected – natural disasters, growing pains, litigation, and budget crises.
